When you’re renovating your home, don’t overlook the backyard. There are many good reasons to renovate an outdoor area, whether you want to beautify your backyard, extend your living and entertaining space, or improve privacy. Backyard renovations can also add around 11% to a property’s value.

Backyard renovations may be minor or major projects and can suit every price range. Read this guide for a general overview of how much a backyard renovation costs, which professionals you might need to hire, and more tips for planning backyard improvements that suit your style and your budget.

How much does a backyard makeover cost?*

The cost of backyard renovations can be anywhere from $2,000 or less for minor landscaping projects to $20,000 or more with a patio or deck. If you want to add a pool to your backyard, you could pay up to $100,000.

When you’re calculating your backyard budget, make sure you account for the hourly rate of contractors as well as materials. For landscapers and deck builders, expect to pay around $40 – $50 per hour for their services, but they may also charge by the square metre or may quote a flat rate.

It’s recommended to get several quotes for each tradie you need. That way, you can compare prices and services offered and find the best professionals for your project.

Gerard Francisco, owner of Home & Handy in Sydney, says that many of his customers hire him to replace their entire turf so they can have the perfect lawn, but that’s not always necessary.

He says, “A lot want new turf, they want a yard that doesn’t have weeds in it. I’m big on trying to save people money. A lot of people just have an area that’s dry or got burrs in it, and they really just need to fix that part of it rather than start again from scratch. They appreciate that honesty and because they’ve already budgeted for the whole lawn, they can then do some other things that they wanted to do down the line.”

One of the things he recommends spending the extra budget on is something to help people relax. He said, “I always think water features, particularly if there’s no pool, are a good thing. The trickle of that water is nice and calming, it’s relaxing, it makes people chill. If you keep it clean and tidy, there won’t be any major problems.”

Factors that affect backyard renovation costs

The cost of outdoor improvements can depend on a number of factors, including:

  • The type of work being done
  • The size of your outdoor area
  • The quality of materials
  • What paperwork may be needed
  • Local rates in your area

The biggest expense in most backyard projects is the materials you choose. If you’re planning to use timber for landscaping jobs, decking or other renovations, be aware that timber shortages in Australia have driven up prices and could cause delays in projects.

Major projects, such as adding an insulated patio, outdoor kitchen or swimming pool, will be towards the higher end of average costs. Any structural work, like retaining walls, will also likely involve plans and reports, which is extra expense.

How long will my backyard renovation take?

How long an outdoor renovation is likely to take will depend on the extent of the improvements.

  • Small projects like laying turf, installing plants or renovating an existing deck or patio may be completed in less than a week, or even a weekend.
  • A renovation that includes building a new deck, laying paths and installing outdoor lighting could take 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Major renovations, such as adding outbuildings or installing a pool, could take 2 months or longer, depending on their size and complexity.

Outdoor improvements may also be affected by weather and climate conditions, which should be factored into the estimated timeline.

Who do I hire for a backyard renovation?

You might need to hire various local services for your backyard project, depending on your plans. These may include:

  • A landscaper or gardener to create or improve your green space
  • A landscape designer or architect to plan your garden makeover
  • A deck builder or patio builder to renovate existing structures or install a new patio or deck
  • A pool builder if you’re installing or modifying a pool
  • A licensed electrician to install outdoor lighting and other electrical connections

Whether your tradie needs to be licensed can depend on the size or value of the project and local regulations in your state. Generally, electrical work and structural work will require a licensed professional. You should also check that all work is covered by insurance.

The layout of a garden is a key factor in how much you’re going to enjoy the new space. And Home & Handy’s Gerard Francisco says that’s one of the major downfalls he sees in some people’s plans.

Gerard says, “A common problem is where they want things. It’s not always practical and they do things without thinking two months ahead, about the problems it can create.”

“Sunlight doesn’t cost anything but where you put things can basically get rid of it and then you’ve got green mould or algae growing that can cause problems. Something small like that can cause a slip and be responsible for a major accident.”

It’s insights like this that make it worthwhile speaking to an experienced gardener or landscape designer before committing to any plans.

Budget ideas for backyard makeovers

If your budget doesn’t stretch to major projects like installing a pool or patio, or your backyard only needs a little work, there are plenty of ways to make big improvements on a smaller budget. Here are some ideas for affordable backyard renovations:

  • Plants – When choosing plants, it’s important to think about the long-term costs of maintenance or replacement. You can save money by buying native plants that are well-adapted to your local climate, and prioritise tasks such as blocking views and providing shade.
  • Outdoor lighting -Lighting is essential for outdoor dining and entertaining at night. It can also improve safety and security around your garden, as well as enhancing its aesthetic appeal. Low-wattage string lights or self-powering solar lights won’t be a drain on your energy bills.
  • Fire pit – A cheaper alternative to an insulated patio, a fire pit can help keep your outdoor area comfortable in the colder months, as well as being an eye-catching feature itself.
  • Above-ground pool – While it won’t add value to your home like an in-ground pool, an above-ground pool could be an affordable solution or stopgap to help you and your family enjoy the outdoors.

Quality outdoor improvements – what to look for

Whether you’re choosing materials for a deck, paving, pool or outdoor furniture, there are a few things to keep in mind. These materials should ideally be durable, within your budget, suit your overall backyard scheme, and not involve high maintenance.

Here are some tips for choosing quality outdoor features and materials that will last:

  • Gardens – Whether you prefer a wild, low-maintenance garden, a manicured garden, or a place to grow herbs and vegetables, deciding on a garden style will help you to choose suitable plants and features. A landscape architect or garden designer can also offer expert advice.
  • Decks – The cost of a deck will depend on its size and the materials used. Hardwood timbers are the preferred choice for a natural-looking wooden deck, but they require regular maintenance. Composite decking is a low-maintenance alternative that can be made to resemble natural timbers.
  • Patios – Patios may be made from concrete, brick, natural stone, tile or other materials. Concrete can have stains and textures applied to look like natural stone at a fraction of the price. You can make your patio useable in all conditions by adding a roof or making it fully enclosed, depending on your budget.
  • Pools – If you’re investing in an in-ground pool, the main options are fibreglass and concrete pools. Fibreglass pools are cheaper, but the shell will need to be replaced after a number of years. A concrete pool will also require occasional maintenance to keep it sealed and repair any cracks.

What regular maintenance jobs are needed for outdoor areas?

Backyards and outdoor areas require regular maintenance to keep them presentable and prevent damage through neglect. Depending on what features you have in your outdoor area, general maintenance may involve:

  • Cutting grass
  • Removing weeds and trimming hedges
  • Maintaining a deck or patio
  • Cleaning and maintaining a pool

Local maintenance services such as gardeners and pool cleaners can make sure your backyard is given the regular care and attention it needs.

You can reduce backyard maintenance by considering low-maintenance options such as synthetic turf, drought-tolerant plants and composite decking rather than timber.

What are common repair jobs for an outdoor area?

Outdoor repairs can range from turf repair and replanting to structural repairs for a patio, fence or pool.

A gardener or general handyman will be able to help with most backyard repair jobs, but others may require a specialist, such as a carpenter.
